art and ethics

December 4, 2008

In a recent Arts and Cultural Policy class we discussed art and ethics, especially in regards to antiquities being returned to their country of origin. Rachel forwarded an article on the Cleveland Museum of Art just recently agreeing to return 14 pieces from their collection. Check out the article: Cleveland Museum of Art to Return Art to Italy

I found an article from Archeology online where you can see the photographs found in the Swiss warehouse of Giacomo Medici that sparked, as Ariel David states in the Cleveland Museum article, the “worldwide hunt for Italy’s lost treasures.”

Rosalyn found an article in the New York Times about artistic entrepreneurship. Check it out. Thanks Rosalyn!
Transforming Art Into A More Lucrative Career Choice

Transforming Art Into a More Lucrative Career Choice

Aiming to end the notion that “starving” and “artist” are necessarily linked, some artists have begun to figure out ways to make art and money at the same time.

Obama is reading history and talking about it on “60 Minutes.” His interests in FDR’s presidency and his first 100 days in office are encouraging for readers and historians.  Is a plug from the president-elect a bigger boost than one from Oprah’s book club? We’ll see. But more importantly, yay for reading history!

The article quotes Adam Cohen, author of Nothing to Fear: F D R’s Inner Circle and the Hundred Days That Created Modern America, “When people write history, they do not think that it will have any impact on world events,” Mr. Cohen said. “So the idea that we now have a president-elect who is reading multiple books of history and is reading them to shape how he will approach his presidency, I think is inspiring to historians everywhere and augurs well for his presidency. If those who forget history are condemned to repeat it, President Obama seems to really be trying to learn the lessons of history and any historian, whether he reads their book or not, should be very pleased by that.”

Anyone that inspires people to read and be inspired by history, is ok by me.
Read “For Books, Is Obama New Oprah?”

Check out The Good Sheet for a graph that gives you the highlights of the first 100 days of every president since FDR. Which includes Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush.

Know the plan, check out Obama’s fact sheet for supporting the arts. Download the pdf here

onPhilanthropy publisher Tom Watson and author of CauseWired: Plugging In, Getting Involved, Changing the World, relates the president-elects victory to the future of philanthropy and online action in this article: A CauseWired Campaign: What Obama’s Online Victory Means for the Social Sector
The big picture is that “nonprofit clients are asking about websites like Barack Obama’s.”

Any thoughts on the influence of the president-elect on the arts?

Welcome!

The arts management community at Claremont Graduate University is full of individuals interested in the future of well-managed arts organizations. We’ve all come to Claremont separately to gain the knowledge. Now here, through this blog, is one option for us to come together as a community.

I’ll be posting interesting tidbits, thoughts, links and questions—so keep checking back in. I know everyone in the arts management program at CGU has different experiences and fascinating stories, so let’s get to know each other! And let’s discuss the happenings, challenges and successes of the world of arts managers. Comment, post, or send my way any events, insight, ideas or whatever you have to offer us.

I hope you enjoy the blog!
